Thursday 15th February, 6 – 8:30pm: What no fear looks like — An All-Black Collective Exhibition
What no fear looks like is an immersive collection of works spanning different mediums from film, performance, poetry, painting, sculpture and sound design by ten Black practitioners which include a number of RCA postgraduates and so forth such as, Josh Woolford, Ramzia Jawara, Roisin Jones, Ijeoma Uzoukwu, Sam Oladele, Daisy Jones, Munesu Mukombe, Moroé Poupeau, Esther Kehinde Ajayi and Wa-ju Ekeji.
In celebration of a new awareness and a new era, the works explore the relationship and understanding of representation as an act of negotiating and redefining identities. The significance of the collective’s existence lies in the imperative need to delve deeper into the content of art’s subtle reflections of identity and race. Therefore, blackness in this context takes on another signification while simultaneously defying its usual application and attributes as something limited. Taking inspiration from the Black Art An' Done exhibition held at Wolverhampton Art Gallery over 40 years ago, it reclaims the knowledge of the likes of Eddie Chambers or others such as Rasheed Araeen.
Opening on the night will be Munesu Mukombe with her “Baby When Your Blue” performance. After which, three films which include Josh Woolford’s ‘And you say you’ve never met the devil’, ‘No Floor, No Ceiling’ by Ijeoma Uzoukwu & Sam Oladele, and Ramzia Jawara’s ‘What is mine’, will all have their designated screening times. Other arts will be displayed around the club including sculptures, paintings, and the razor edge photographs by French photographer, Moroé Poupeau. To end the night, a performance by Wa-ju Ekeji will take place.
