Loshh – From Behind the Screen
On March 16th 2023, Shoreditch Arts Club welcomed over 200 guests to celebrate our first moving image commission: Peter Spanjer’s FLOOD OF MEMORY, co-curated by Ruth Waters and Tony Tremlett.
The event, which had been highly anticipated by the team as well as our esteemed members and guests, was in honour of Peter’s video work made especially for our multi-projector setup, and debuted with a performance between the artist and his long time collaborator, the Nigerian-born musician, Loshh.
With the help of the curators and an extended team of technicians, Loshh and Peter utilised the uniqueness of the club to create an immersive performance including a live broadcast onto the screens. Loshh performed from a hidden space behind a screen before stepping into the audience to continue to sing in and around the guests, all filmed and projected in real-time from Peter’s camera onto the custom walls that frame the first floor.
Combining a medley of genres – funk, gospel, soul, and highlife with the support of the DJ cesta, Loshh’s voice enveloped the space as he moved through the crowd and interacted with his audience.
Creating a stage as he walked, Loshh’s focus was on the lens of the camera, albeit aligned with the eyes of onlookers, all suggesting the event was some special taste of a forthcoming music video.
After the performance, cesta kept the tunes going as guests continued to order cocktails, hatched especially for the event by the team led by our General Manager the award-winning mixologist Walter Pintus.
With drinking and dancing continuing late into the evening it was exciting to reflect on how artists and performers find unique ways to bring the club to life. Needless to say we are excitedly looking forward to future events, forthcoming creative responses to the space, more experimentation, collaboration, and… cocktails.
