Members Mixer and Tour at Interval — Lorette

  • Interval 73 Compton Street London, England, EC1V 0BN United Kingdom (map)

Wednesday 5th August, 6 — 7pm: Members Mixer and Tour at Interval — Lorette: Scarlet Topley and Ed Ruscha

Please join us at the beautiful Interval in Clerkenwell for an intimate members’ mixer, led by the Club’s longtime collaborator and Interval co-founder David Gryn.

See the ongoing exhibition Lorette by Scarlet Topley, the first exhibition of Interval One, an annual programme featuring one graduating artist each year, aiming to showcase their work alongside historical influences, whilst also supporting the beginning stages of their career.

The exhibition takes its title from a message received from the artist’s sister whilst on a romantic weekend away in Paris. The tablecloth read Lorette in a scarlet red font with an illustration of a maid sat just above. Lorette refers to a 19th-century Parisian sex worker who was located near the church Notre-Dame-de-Lorette. Scarlet Topley's new works for Lorette emerge from two years of activity in her shed in Camden and at the Ruskin School of Art. The works on display reveal Topley's devotion to Americana and its uncanny solitude.

Scarlet Topley, b.1999 London, is an artist who works across disciplines the way most people try on outfits before a party. She takes notes on television episodes and Reddit threads and she screenshots Reels. The logic of Scarlet’s artwork is that of re-presentation and arrangement. The objects, paintings, performances and installations she produces speak of the fracturing contemporary experience wherein one moment we might find ourselves crying with a stranger, and the next laughing alone in the dark.
