In an age of Immersive Experiences, what relevance do exhibitions still hold? With the promise of high-definition screens and 360 immersion, traditional encounters with art are being supplanted by new technology that brings them closer to the realm of entertainment. Is critical engagement with the ideas that shape our world being left behind? Or do these new digital frontiers offer new and greater potential to artists to express themselves, while expanding the type of audiences who it is possible for them to reach?

Join artists Julianknxx and Marguerite Humeau, for an informal conversation with ArtReview editor J.J. Charlesworth, as they discuss the pros and pitfalls of these rapidly developing new approaches to showing and experiencing art.   

ARTREVIEW CULTURE CLUB is a place for art professionals, creatives, and collectors to discuss timely topics in contemporary art and culture. The 2023 and 2024 talks programme will feature some of the most innovative voices shaping the local and global art and culture scenes.

Julianknxx is an interdisciplinary artist at the intersection of poetry, visual art, and filmmaking. Casting his own practice as a ‘living archive’ or a ‘history from below’, he draws inspiration from West African traditions of oral history to reframe how we construct both local and global perspectives. Currently a resident artist at 180 Studios in London, has exhibited his work in the UK and internationally. His solo exhibition at the Barbican opens 14 September.

Marguerite Humeau spans great distances in space and time in her pursuit of the mysteries of human existence, ranging from prehistory to imagined future worlds. She breathes life into lost things, whether they be lifeforms that have become extinct or ideas that have disappeared from our mental landscapes. Filling gaps in knowledge with speculation and imagined scenarios, her aim is to create new mythologies for our contemporary era. Humeau exhibited at the 59th Venice Biennale, and her new 160-acre site earthwork Orisons in Hooper, Colorado – produced together with the nomadic art museum Black Cube – opened in July 2023 and is on view until June 2025.
