Monday 21st September, 7 — 8pm: Future:Social Session 03
Future:Social is a monthly gathering at Shoreditch Arts Club bringing together a small group of thinkers and practitioners around one question.
The third session explores ‘Why We Dance’.
Long before we could tell each other anything, we could show each other. It happens at wedding receptions and in mosh pits, at the Royal Opera House and in kitchens at two in the morning. It is the only language we all still share.
Most of us claim not to speak it. We're too self-conscious, people will stare, and we don't want to get that close to a bunch of strangers, thank you very much. Then the beat takes over, and we speak it fluently for hours without noticing.
It is also one of the fastest ways we connect. Conversation is built for two people at a time, but a beat is for everyone at once. Put ninety-four adults through a silent disco, and a few minutes of moving together leaves them feeling closer, without a word exchanged.
And we are losing the places to do it: thirty grassroots venues closed for good in the year to July 2025. Lose those, and we lose the rooms where we still say things to each other without saying a word.
Host Claire Warner will be joined by Lucy Dixon of House of Lemon, Yasmine Naghdi of The Royal Ballet, and cognitive neuroscientist Inder Singh-Virdi.
Come and learn how to dance better, or how to stop caring what you look like – turns out that's the same thing.
