Monday 30th November, 6— 9:30pm: A—Z Artist Focus Act III: Last Orders - Emily Pope
We close our Artist Focus series with Emily Pope's new film premiere: Last Orders, which explores themes of obsession and rebirth. Works by invited artists: Sam Cottington, Jeanie Crystal, Vei Darling, Vivienne Griffin, Jennifer Lauren Martin (and more TBC) will accompany the premiere.
Emily works across moving images, writing, installation and performance. Rooted in humour and personal experience, her practice turns a sardonic eye on the state of the UK. She has been making The Sitcom Show, a sprawling episodic series shot on a webcam, iPhone and handheld, since 2016. The series documents a private record of public spending, filtering a filmic diary through the tropes of traditional sitcoms.
Two summers ago, broke, between homes and spectacularly hungover, our protagonist finds herself housesitting a three-storey house in London, with only an ailing kitten named Moana, an endless supply of white wine and an Australian lesbian prison drama for company. Her one responsibility? Don't let the kitten die. An accidentally purchased £75 theatre ticket drags her out of bed and into a performance of People, Places and Things that changes everything. Two years, several breakdowns and stints of sobriety later, she is mourning her former life and determined to start living vividly. But how do you reinvent yourself in a world that seems to be falling apart? With pubs and art schools disappearing and political catastrophes everywhere, she faces her biggest challenge yet: figuring out how to live when you're no longer trying to escape.
A—Z Artist Focus at Shoreditch Arts Club
Since 2012, A—Z (by Anne Duffau) has operated as a nomadic curatorial platform, moving between sites and communities rather than settling into a fixed institutional home. Our focus events in collaboration with Shoreditch Arts Club continues this itinerant approach, opening a space for close, sustained attention to individual practices within a social and convivial setting.
Shoreditch Arts Club members have access to this event. Please contact us to book in. Public RSVPs available soon.
